Miguel Ángel Bañares, Doctor Honoris Causa

On October 7th, Professor Dr. Miguel A. Bañares (Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry, CSIC) was invested Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Caen Normandie (France) in recognition of his contribution to the origin and development of the methodology "operand”; an advanced methodology that characterizes catalytic materials as they work. Bañares coined the term "operand”. The advantage over methods in situ The conventional logic is that it allows the structure and the catalytic property to be connected by being both identified simultaneously while the reaction occurs. The degree also recognizes the collaboration with the University of Caen, Normandie, through the group of Professor Marco Daturi and, specifically, the combination of simultaneous Raman and infrared measurements, taking advantage of the complementary experience of both researchers in these spectroscopies. Professor Daturi presented the Laudatio and, subsequently, Professor Bañares made his acceptance speech. It so happens that the University of Caen only teaches the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa every ten years, which if possible gives added value to this appointment. Bañares is Associate Editor of Catalysis Today (Elsevier) and has enjoyed a Chaire d'excellence (ERDF-Normandie Region) at the Université de Caen Normandie-CNRS, has been "Otto Mønsted" Distinguished professor at the Denmark Technical University (DTU), Lyngby, Denmark and Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the National University of La Plata, Argentina. Bañares has given about 10 plenary lectures and about 30 keynotes, and is the author of about 200 publications. He is a member of the scientific committees of International Symposia on Group Five Compounds and the International Symposium on Catalytic Science and Technology in Sustainable Energy and Environment (EECAT, Tianjin, China) as well as the Operating Conferences, of which he is a co-founder.
